Beginner Meditation For Busy Mums - 7 Tips To Get You Started
Oct 03, 2023To a lot of Mumma's, although meditation seems like a great idea, getting started can be quite daunting. If you are not sure where to start, and believe that it is impossible to “turn off your brain”, you have no time, or there's just no point, the art of putting off starting a practice becomes second nature.
The thing is, you know deep down how beneficial meditation would be, you know how much it would help with your stress and anxiety levels. You want to try, because you crave time alone to just be, without being covered in sticky banana, or hearing the word "MMUUUUUMMMM!" for the umpteenth time.
So I am here today, to help relieve some of the pressure in your quest for peace an harmony and give you 7 great tips for starting your meditation practice.
- Make It A Priority
I know....... You hate hearing this. But please remember that you can't be the best for your family if your cup is completely empty. If you take only one thing away from this post let it be this – Self Care is NOT Self-Ish
- Create a Beautiful Space
If you can create a dedicated space for your meditation in the study or spare room fantastic. Use cushions, blankets, candles, a diffuser, music and crystals to give this space a beautiful and calming energy. If, like me, your house doesn't cater for that, grab a box and fill it with all the stuff you would like to use. Then bring out the box and set it up before you begin, it gives you a little pre meditation ritual and gets you prepared to be still. Remember on a beautiful day you can take your meditation outside to your garden, the forest or the park.
- Practice Mindfulness
Whilst doing the dishes, cleaning, sitting in your garden or eating, really take in the experience. What things are you feeling on your skin or with your hands? What sounds can you hear? If eating, focus on chewing and the beautiful taste you are experiencing. What colors can you see? You can also try a guided Mindfulness Meditation, I have one on Youtube you can try, find it here.
- Try Not To Judge Your Thoughts
As I mentioned at the beginning, a huge expectation that most people have, is that they should be able to "switch off their brain" as they meditate. For most people this is impossible. The idea of meditation is to be able to allow thoughts without attaching to them. For most, this is not easy, and it takes practice. You will find my blog on how to do this here.
- Start Simple
Diving into a 45 minute meditation connecting to all sorts of Angels and Cosmic beings may be a little much for your first time. My suggestion, start simple and short. Simple relaxation and breathing techniques that last 5 to 10 minuets are perfect to allow yourself me time, plus unwind and let go of daily stress.
- There Is No Right Or Wrong
Meditation is a completely personal journey. There is no “right” or "wrong" way to do it or experience it. Some people take months to get into the flow, others only a few meditations and they get the hang of it. The journey is unique and beautiful and that is an important thing to remember. Sitting up, lying down, hand positions, no hand positions, full moon, new moon, it doesn't matter. It is all about what feels right to you.
- Keep A Journal
As you begin your practice, I highly suggest keeping a meditation journal. You can right down how you felt before and after, as you progress you can keep track of how you are doing with attaching to your expectations and thoughts. Later as you deepen your practice, you can record feelings, color, sensations in the body and even messages from your guides and loved ones. It is wonderful to be able to look back and see how far you have travelled.
I hope these little tips help you as you begin, and please remember you can always contact me here and follow me on Facebook or Instagram to keep in touch and up to date.
